SHARPS WASTE DISPOSAL OPTIONS

  1. Pick Up Service

Sharps waste and other types of medical waste can be picked up from dental facilities by authorized medical waste transporters.  A list of authorized transporters can be found on the Department of Public Health Web site

  2. Approved Alternative Treatment Technology

You can treat sharps waste with approved alternative treatment technology.  The use of approved steam sterilization, incineration, or microwave technology on-site by a waste generator requires a permit.  The DPH has approved two alternative treatment technologies for sharps waste that do not require a permit for use.

  3. Approved Mail-Back System

DPH also approves mail-back systems for sharps disposal. Listed below is a list of approved vendors as of October 2008.

By using an approved mail-back system, you can dispose of sharps waste in an economical fashion. These systems offer mailers to assist in returning the sharps waste to an appropriate medical waste treatment facility. This type of system is appropriate for sharps waste only. Companies who offer such services must have the system approved by the California Department of Public Health prior to its use by any California medical waste generator.
